As Oscar Wilde stated in the preface of his book The Picture of Dorian Gray: “We can forgive a man for making a useful thing as long as he does not admire it. The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely. All art is quite useless.”

<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">Óscar Silva, who has a vast
background within the Portuguese music scene as a member of bands like I Had
Plans, Adorno, Papaya and more, recently came to prominence as the snake
charmer hiding behind the name JIBÓIA. After the release of the self-titled EP
in 2013, Óscar has been refining this ancient art and the result is 2014’s
Badlav, the debut album which is the result of a joint effort between Óscar and
Ana Miró (Sequin). <o:p></o:p></span></b></div>

<b><span style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;"><o:p><br /></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">1 – </span></b><b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">Having a quite vast musical background most of our readers might be
unaware of which projects do you believe marked you the most? <o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">Every single project I got involved left a mark on me,
each one in its own way. I started quite early playing some heavier genres,
like hardcore and screamo, with some friends. But the band that made me aware
of how satisfying it was to play music was Suchi Rukara, in which I played with
Ricardo and Iuri. With them I formed I Had Plans, being joined by Rui and
Tiago. But in between there was a lot of other bands: Adorno, with which I did
my first tours; in Asneira I came closer to cleaner guitars; Papaya, which will
be releasing a new album quite soon...<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">2 – It seems like the birth of JIBÓIA
was somehow an early labour/premature. How did it happen?</span></b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">I believe you mean the fact that everything happened
so quickly, right? Yes, the journey started (during a trip...) with Cangarra,
who challenged me to open for a gig they were about to play in Évora (Portugal).
The concert would be a month later so I put my hands to work, having resulted
in half an hour of music. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">I have had this idea of doing something all by myself
for a while now, there were a number of things I wanted to try, without
commitment. I wanted to step on grounds that were knew to me, to play what I
had never played before. Then I realised I needed a rhythmic base. However,
since I had always played along with drummers, I had no idea how to do it. And
that is when the Casio comes in, which actually is the foundation of everything
I have done since then. So, everything was premature, everything happened too
quickly and I did what I did without putting much thought on what would
eventually come out. And that is how I got where I am.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">3 </span></b><b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">– I believe your first open to the public show took place in a Turkish
restaurant in Oporto, Portugal. There was no better place to introduce the
arrival of JIBÓIA to the world, was it?<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">My first show was not there, it was in Évora as
mentioned above and in between those two shows I played a bunch of them. The
one you are talking about was my first EP release show, which I wanted to be
something different rather than in the usual places. The idea was to do
something related to the concept of the snake. A Turkish restaurant with a big
and old room seemed like a pretty good idea to me at the time.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">4 – Your debut album, Badlav, is
divided into 4 tracks whose titles, I believe, are related to Buddhism or
Hinduism. Is there a concept that supports this album?<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">Yes. The 4 tracks represent the 4 Yugas, or World
Stages, in the Hindu scriptures. Yugas expand in drama and negritude, since the
first one, which represents the birth of the world, when everything is
beautiful and luminous, until the last, which represents the end of the world,
an era of darkness. Together they constitute a cycle, because when this world
dies, it is reborn ever again. The idea of this album was based on this
concept. We wanted to work with some kind of dichotomy. The first two tracks
are happier than the last two. From that came all the album’s imagery, the
cover photos, the black and white of the artwork, etc.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">5 – Taking into account other projects you have been,
or still are, involved into, like Papaya and I Had Plans, it is quite curious
to find you exploring this kind of sonorities with a clear Middle East vibe. Is
there any specific reason or did it just happen this way?<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">It just happened. Probably because at that time
(before that first show) I was discovering a lot of stuff external to the
so-called “western” music that I didn’t know before. I started off with Omar
Souleyman and that reflects on what I do. I found that scale, that I’ve never
played before, quite interesting and started to explore that nuance. It is
deliberately different from the work with Papaya or I Had Plans. It is like an
experimental lab where I can try at ease, without bothering anyone.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">6 – </span></b><b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">Even prior to the release of the album, JIBÓIA was accused by Al Lover
of holding one of the best shows he saw in 2013 and including one of your songs
into one of his mix tapes. How does someone deal with such a big compliment at
such an earlier stage of the project’s life?<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">I don’t even know… Sometimes I don’t even fell the
weight of those compliments. I met Al Lover during his last year’s show at
Lounge (Lisbon). I had played shortly before in Lisbon and the idea was to stop
playing here for a while, but when we knew he was coming over, and since we
already knew he was fond of the project, we set up a surprise. I set my stuff
up and played right before his performance. I don’t even think my show was that
good, I had some technical issues, etc. But it seems like he loved it. It was a
blast, all that familiar ambience. Since then we have been meeting and
chatting. That’s why it feels so natural.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">7 – In 2013 it was released the physical
evidence of JIBÓIA’s existence, JIBÓIA EP. What changed between the release of
the EP and the album? Was there any change of equipment or approach that has
influenced the evolution of JIBÓIA?<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">JIBÓIA EP was recorded in order to document the tracks
I was playing live at that initial stage. I need to record those tracks so I
could move on. My friend, Ana Miró, came in during the last song of the EP and
since then we decided we were going to do something together, having her voice as
the base of the album. Probably, “the change of equipment” that influenced the
sound of this album the most was Miró’s voice. As for my equipment, I used
almost the same layout I had used on the EP.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">8 – As for the EP’s production, you worked with Makoto
Yagyu (Riding Pânico, PAUS), but when working on the album that task was handed
to XINOBI, major Discotexas’ figure. Was there a premeditated decision to make
JIBÓIA more danceable?<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">Yes, totally. Makoto was a natural choice for the
first EP. We have been friends for a quite long time and I believe the majority
of the records I did were with him. But I knew that, like everything else in
JIBÓIA, I wanted to try to record different ambiences and other production
styles. At the time we recorded Papaya’s EP with XINOBI and that’s how I got to
know his work a little better. After that, I really wanted to try something
related to JIBÓIA with him. I knew it would bring a more danceable facet, which
was something I really wanted to try.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">9 – For the ones who have never seen
you play live, how do you present yourself? And how is it to command everything
after have been playing in bands along with some of the best Portuguese
musicians?<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">When playing live, I behave a little obsessively.
Being in control of everything gives me a lot of freedom, but with that comes
greater responsibility. That’s why, every once in a while, I get “tired” of
being alone and decide to invite a friend to play along. Of course I’m still
the one who must assume the command, but the responsibility (and the audience’s
attention) is shared. But that’s not even the reason, the will to do something
with different people is what drives me in this project. It is like JIBÓIA were
a platform that I use to bring to life my reveries.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">10 – Still in 2013 we committed such
an act of folly. You presented JIBÓIA with a kind of big band formation under
the title of JIBÓIA EXPERIENCE, which turned Milhões de Festa (Portuguese festival
set up by Lovers & Lollipops) into a quasi-Woodstock. What were you
thinking? Which memories do you recall from that night and the whole process
that lead into it?<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">Since the first shows that I have that curiosity of
wanting to know how would this work with a band playing. The idea stuck into my
mind until the L&L invitation to do it at that Milhões edition. I thought
that was the perfect chance to bring the idea to life. And so it was: lots of
people, lots of friends, lots of late rehearsals (too close to the show,
because some of those friends were not living in Lisbon, which turned it into a
really arduous task to find a time and date when everyone was available). Those
were some of the most intense days I’ve ever experienced, for a lot of reasons.
Then the big night came. It was something beyond description. Even today, when
I think about it, I cannot understand quite well the magic that happened there,
how it was possible to get so many talented people on the same stage.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">11 – A few months later the debut
album’s release, what is the feeling of being able to play the Liverpool Psych
Fest?<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">It’s a lovely feeling. The show at the Psych Fest was
set way earlier before the release of the album. But it ended up happening at
the perfect time, quite close to the release. There were too many great bands
on that line-up. It is a gigantic pleasure to be side by side with so many
giants.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">12 – On that same day, your brothers
(or cousins) Black Bombaim also played at the Liverpool Psych Fest, which is a
band I believe is quite beloved among the readers of It’s Psychedelic, Baby. It
has been said countless times that L&L is one big family: how is it to be
part of such a dysfunctional family?<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">It is a great pleasure and advantage to be able to be
part of this family and to play with a series of good bands, which are
basically governed by the same principles or by the same will to make something
happen. The most important and vital thing is the will to listen to music, to
make music, to meet such disparate bands and sounds. I think that’s what makes
everybody being together around this. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">13 – Are there any scheduled shows
outside of Portugal that you can anticipate? How does the L&L and Shit
Music For Shit People (SMFSP, Italy) joint release happen?<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">There are plans for an European Tour in the middle of
the next year, but nothing is certain yet. Shit Music For Shit People is the
label of an Italian guy, Tommaso, that I met through a friend of a friend. Last
year we played in Sardinia (which was the first JIBÓIA show outside of
Portugal) and that was when we met him in person. Since the very beginning that
he is a great enthusiast of what we been doing, Miró and I, and since the
beginning he showed to be interested in releasing the album that brings us
together.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">14 – One question that I believe to
be vital: how is it possible to perform at seven a.m. at a Reverence Valada
plenty with so many good bands? Was there any survivor left?<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;">I have no idea how it is done. But it seems like it
happened and there were a few survivors to testify. After so many performances
and so many good bands in a festival that, in my own opinion, was a milestone
in this year’s calendar, that last apparition was the culmination of hours of
waiting to perform, of hours of chatting and hours of good gigs. Everything
happening right on that stage. That was me trying to wake myself up, trying to
do something. And from that something quite different from the majority of my
shows came out. I do not know if it was better or worse than my other efforts.
What matters is that everybody was more death than alive, no one remembers what
happened. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Helvetica;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b><span lang="EN-GB" style="background: white; font-family: Helvetica;">15 – To speak of JIBÓIA without
speaking of Ana Miró (Sequin) is quite a difficult task. You have already stated

this is a blog about psychedelic music let me start off by asking why do you

psychedelic rock. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

don't tend to adhere to a specific sense of genre boundary or particular music
vocabulary in favour of experimentation so we rarely fit into a particular
scene and that's something we're comfortable with. I think that instead we are
creating our own sonic world with its own set of creative 'rules' and as long
as we don't break these unspoken rules then our world stays tangible and
visceral, the moment we break those rules the whole world would crumble down

our childhood that called it ‘soccer’ as they were made and designed in Japan
or the USA. Soccer always sounds like a computer game to us. We wanted a name
that sounded like a game because that was what we grew up doing with our
friends, when we were young, with the soundtracks were like our computer folk
music! Sometimes performing our music feels like a playing a game on two player

also an absurdist or surrealist name designed to plant our flag firmly in

to work creatively with the sound before we start recording. Sonically it cooks
sounds together, adds a bit of colour, makes the drums sound more classic,
gives instant vibe. Working away from computers at the initial stage of
recording also puts our collective mind in a very different place. We think
only of the moment, the excitement, the creation. The flow of tape is flowing
through our minds. If you love tape, then it will love you back. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12.0pt;">Dan: A lot of our favourite music has been recorded
using tape. It's interesting to think that the history of music we own on vinyl
from the 30s into the 80s is all recorded on tape. Infact, in our first band
together A Scandal In Bohemia we supported Thee Silver Mount Zion, an offshoot
of Godspeed, and guitarist Efrim encouraged us to record to tape, that's how
they do all their stuff. Digital has been here for less time, and yet it now
seems to be the obvious option. Possibly part of the time speed up effect
technology has had on our brains.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12.0pt;">Joe Watson is actually writing a PHD about Analogue
technique and the notion that just because a new technology comes round doesn't
mean you have to completely throw out the old one! A lot of the practicality of
recording has been improved using computers but the sound - especially drums -
hitting the tape is just magic. We still use computers for editing and cutting
up and finishing tunes though. It also feels great to be recording, look round
and the reel to reel is spinning round, like more precious somehow.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0cm; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12.0pt;">Joe Watson is friends with Demons Are Real label boss
Rob White. He has a very meticulous, careful methodology to engineering which
helps us a lot when we are in full creative chaos! But he also had inventive
ideas, like putting the drums through vocoder, which I don't think he realised
quite how extremely we were going to use that effect on the final mix of Earth
Attack.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12.0pt;">Dan: The SH-09 I got when I was 17 and I basically
fell in love with it immediately. I rang up a mate and played it down the phone
for about 15 minutes! It's mono so you can only play one note at a time, but
makes a great bass instrument as well as sound effect madness. When I got the
Juno it was like re-living the moment when polyphony came into the synth world,
suddenly I could play chords as well as tweak all the knobs. They are from
around the same manufacture timeframe, late 70s, early 80s, both by Roland, and
I love that. But mainly, I love the way they sound. You can give them to
anybody, plug them in and they will sound great. They are very simple too, you
can move any of the knobs and it will dramatically alter the sound. I like to
close my eyes, move all the faders and see what sound comes out.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12.0pt;">Rob White met us outside our third gig in Brighton
supporting Dan Friel from Parts and Labour and basically convinced us to let
him cook us a curry dinner (he had been living in india for a few years and is
a great cook) and then he convinced us he should release our record. He managed
to collect 500 quid from friends and family to put us in a studio for a couple
of days, and also encouraged us to release Call To Arms as a single, which we
probably wouldn't have done otherwise. He loved that song. He was heavily
involved in the post-punk fanzine scene in the 80s and obsesses over the
tradition of single releases.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

record as well as ours, we were going to be the first release on his new label,
so I really wanted to happen for Rob more than anything else. And when we ended
up in Studio 4 at Maida Vale where all the legendary John Peel sessions were
recorded doing a live session for Steve Lamacq, Rob came along and it was a
proper magic moment. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

because we got it in the can. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

Stoke Newington since the last release. It's a unbelievable place, a live-in
artist warehouse spot with recording studio run by Capitol K (a great recording
artist - check out his music!) rehearsal studio, and big live space for gigs
and art installations. Max lived there for a bit so we played a lot in there, a
lot of our new LP has been tracked in there as well as Constellation off
Jupiter Masterdrive. It's gaining popularity now to the point where I was
mixing a band in the control room and Thurston Moore came in to check it out.
But there's such a great vibe, it used to be a Jamaican social club in the 70s,
the mixing console and outboard gear there is rad, and the gigs we have done
there have been packed out, hot and sweaty like the old post punk loft scene in
New York, lots of tribal hypnotic grooves from great bands like Boss Terror,
Blurt, Super Best Friends Club, Totem, and that has definitely had an effect on
the way we approach our new tracks. The french anarchist Alexis who runs the
place just has a 'build it and they will come' mentality that is so brave and
often lacking today.. like once he fancied having a hiphop skate jam and with
days had built a skate park downstairs and made it happen, we recently have
started doing 3 course dinner jazz nights there, there are african drum nights,
experimental film nights, its a really inspiring collective to be part of and
we're really proud to be part of it. Anybody who visits london, come and find
the Total Refreshment Centre ! </span><span style="color: #222222; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12.0pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

pretty hard! It took a long conversation to convince her that we had to have
the owl destroying the wolf with a laser beam coming out of its eye! I was
pretty convinced it had to be animals fighting, to kind of represent the battle
between the two of us on stage. She captured the vivid colours and the

sound rather than recall it. We trust our instincts to guide us, embracing the

sound and our bodies to release the sacred energy within us. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

songs a lot since the first record, we've just been waiting for the right
moment and opportunity to record and release them. At gigs we extend tracks a
lot, improvise on stage and treat live performance as a chance to create an
alternate psychedelic dimension. We both feel that through becoming one with
the music and the audience we can attempt to transcend the illusory material
world, as mad as that sounds! We see our job like modern day shaman with our
music as our drugs to offer spiritual medicine to those who want to come on the
journey with us.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

have been many holdups with the record, its been a long time coming! It is
however a pretty simple thing, 3 tracks on a 7" vinyl, born out of us
buying our own beaten up tape machine and experimenting with sounds by
recording jams in a little spare room in Dan's old flat in Brighton. They are
largely instrumental, we kind of pushed away from writing songs to explore our
proggy leanings, they are like 3 miniature epics. We also worked with a bass
player called Swann Hunter who took us to quite a groovy place on one track.
It's coming out on WotNot Music an electronic music label in London, hopefully

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Magic Carpet Ride EP (2013)<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">One guitar, one bass, one drum set. The mighty power trio. Blues. Souls
sold to the devil. Muddy Waters tripping so hard he still believes the world
ended in 1967. Ladies and gentlemen: Brain Pyramid. Formed in November 2012,
this young band from Rennes, France, released their debut EP, Magic Carpet
Ride, last April with their minds stuck in the past, refusing to acknowledge
the 21st century is for good, evoking Hendrix without regret. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">This magic ride starts off with Bad Luck, a 5 minute explosion of acid
blues that leaves no room for misunderstandings. These guys love the blues and
wear nothing but bell-bottoms. The second track, Stone Woman Blues, emphasizes
the idea in case you didn’t get it the first time. Mary Jane Blues is a sweet acoustic-driven
ballad with hand clapping setting the rhythm and an awesome slide work by
Gaston Lainé. Cosmic 1000 Years and Electric Spell, the longest and final
tracks, show a more spaced out side of Brain Pyramid. The incredibly tight
rhythm section and sinuous guitar work worthy of the ancient golden days of
psychedelic rock will ride you through dusty landscapes inhabited by boozy
characters and sexy women willing to mislead you as soon as you drop your
defenses. Watch out!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">To promote their work they are heading for an Iberian Tour in September
in which, according to Bapt, they have been working on for some time now and
are looking forward to play outside France. “I can’t hide the fact that I’m
fucking excited. We’re glad to go on the road, meet people who like our culture
and music and make new friends! Let’s hope the van will hold the whole tour.”
When asked about how it is to be in an acid rock band in Rennes, the band
stated that only a little bunch of people come to see them regularly and that
it’s an arduous task to bring more people to the shows. However, the band
doesn’t throw in the towel because they know it’s just a matter of time and
patience and doing what they believe in and despite the fact that the band is
not even one year old yet, Brain Pyramid have already managed to share the
stage with some big names in the scene, being Blues Pills the biggest one, and
will soon add The Grand Astoria (December 2013) to their curriculum. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

honored to be playing in Black Bombaim’s hometown and ready to feel the

Forget about heavy distorted guitar/bass riffs. At least for now.<br />
The Vliets, currently working on their full length debut, drink from nowadays
electronic scene as much as they do from 60s psychedelia, trapped between
avant-gardism and nostalgia, meandering between Austin and Chicago. Their first
release, The Vliets EP, dates back from 2011 and was followed by last year’s
God’s Drug EP, having both of them revealed a very mature sound as well as a band
that knows how to spice up things without overdoing it. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

since the beginning, or before this band, just at different times. I've
been playing music with Max since we were like 14 years old, he's always been
the drummer. Preston recently became more involved in our live show
production but will be contributing to the music as well, as he has some in the
past. We had some distance issues the last few years, which is why we
didn't play many shows. I live in Heath, TX, Max lives in Austin, Daniel
lives in Chicago and Preston lives in Dallas so it was extremely difficult to
all get together. We've made it work though. Daniel and I wrote and
recorded our last EP over the phone and email. We also incorporated the
lap top into our live sets so we don't have to actually rehearse together
before shows, everyone just rehearses on their own. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

then Daniel joined. We just didn't actually record any music. We
changed the name to The Vliets because I had moved from Austin and I didn't
think Max was going to play with us anymore, otherwise we'd still be Dubious
Rothchild. I was always interested in 60's rock. It's all I
listened to as a child. I think it pretty much goes without saying, the

electronic music, we just don't really know how to make it. I think it
came about because we were just so ignorant when it came to recording
techniques and music software. All of the music on our first two EP's was
recorded through a mic and physically making the sounds, for the most part.
I think it was only natural though because it's a good mix of all the
music we listen to (Grandaddy, Beck, Radiohead, John Frusciante, Neil Young,
Captain Beefheart, múm, The Kinks). I've recently started
experimenting more with the lap top, I think our next album will be a little
more electronic than our previous releases. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

We were on a short tour in California a couple weeks ago and some people
came up to me who were fans prior to seeing us and knew all about the music,
that was pretty insane because we're virtually unknown in Texas, only our
friends show up for the most part. It becomes very political in our
hometowns though, it's hard to even book a show and I'm pretty sure it's like
that for all bands you know? Unless you actively participate in the scene
and be everyones friend, you kind of get left out. We're just not that
kind of band, I'm a pretty shy person anyway, networking is not my thing.
Writing and recording is what we really love to do. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

the lyrics to 'Velvet Sea' I was staring at one of Edgar's paintings.
When I finished the song, I sent it to him and asked if I could use the

things just sort of happen as they will. It's still in it's infancy

chord progressions and beats. I add in everything else as I record so
there's still quite a bit to do. I'm thinking it will be done this fall

<span style="background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Love. Life. Experiences in general. I usually

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Oh yeah for sure. A majority of the writing
happens during the recording process so experimenting and trying different
things is a huge part of our process. I try not to think if it will
translate to a live show or not because I don't want to limit our music that
way. To me the really enjoyable part of music is the actual creating and
shaping of the songs. I couldn't rent time at a studio and go in and try
to record songs in a day, I'd need months in there to try different things and
to really translate what the dimensions or spirits or whatever is trying to get
across.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

recorded that song it was just an instrumental and it felt really warm like the

love, dmt, the mind of 'God', suffering, happiness, life and death. The
song is about all those things, it's not just about morphine, well really it's
not about morphine at all, it just gave me that feeling.<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><o:p></o:p></span><span style="background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"><span class="apple-converted-space"><br /></span></span></div>
