Papa's In The Pen, James Apollo

I really like this kind of surprises!
A couple of days ago a message from James Apollo dropped in the mailbox with his rendition of Garth Brooks’ Papa’s In The Pen.
James Apollo explains how it happened:
“A couple weeks ago the boys and I headed up to an old ski lodge in the Cascade mountains. With the aid of some car batteries and a ripe hell of fallen logs, we recorded a few numbers, such as this bastardized Garth Brooks murder ballad, “Papa’s in the Pen.” Enjoy.”

Interview: Clara Engel

Clara Engel is an independent Toronto-based singer-songwriter and her songs are filled with gothic poetry and beautifully accomplished vocal performances.
This is my debut as an interviewer so I hope you like it. Any feedback is welcome.

Everything is useless: How would you introduce yourself as an artist to someone you've just met?
Clara Engel: Someone once called my music "minimalist holy blues from another galaxy," and that's quite nice. I'd be happiest if I never had to describe my work, or spend time convincing anyone of its value ever again, and just focus on the actual work-making part.

EIU: I must say I was quite impressed by your powerful lyrics which somehow evoke Edgar Allan Poe's dark atmospheres. Is he an influence? What are your literary influences?
CE: That's a lovely compliment, thank you. I love Edgar Allan Poe, and his poetry was some of the first I ever read. I read a lot of poetry and some poetically-inclined literature. I love Paul Celan, Vasko Popa, Essex Hemphill, Rainer Maria Rilke, Helene Cixous, Virginia Woolf, Theodore Roethke, Anne Carson. Right now I'm reading Moominland Midwinter by Tove Jansson, and it's wonderful.

The Wooden Wolf is the folk songwriter alias of Alex Keiling. In his own words this project is intended to be raw, spontaneous & free with no premeditation. An emotion, an impulse, a spur of the moment and a new song is born.
His 14 track debut album, 14 Ballads Op.1, was released last December and can be downloaded from his bandcamp page, you just have to name your price.

News: Devendra Banhart's Mala (2013)

Devendra Banhart revealed a few details about his upcoming album, Mala, which comes out March 12 through Nonesuch. The album cover will feature the painting above done by Devendra himself. Also, Pitchfork is streaming a new track, Für Hildegard von Bingen, and, in my own humble opinion, it sounds pretty good actually.
