Interview: Soccer96 (for It's Psychedelic, Baby)

Soccer96 bring us futuristic soundscapes pierced by extremely groovy jazz-influenced drum beats.
The duo firstly bonded over a mutual love of John Bonham's drumming while in college, where they were part of a group of beatniks who would do experimental jazz jams with the lights out and improvised film soundtracks. This norm-challenging approach became intrinsic to their sound which is proven to induce mind-bending experiences.
Read through and enjoy these guys’ magnificent vibes.

Since this is a blog about psychedelic music let me start off by asking why do you believe your music might be appreciated by the psychedelic music lovers, although your music isn't truly psychedelic as far as music genre goes?

Dan: We are psychedelic in the true definition of it’s dictionary meaning…  "relating to or denoting drugs (especially LSD) that produce hallucinations and apparent expansion of consciousness”.
This meaning is close to our hearts as we believe in using music as a tool to elevate our consciousness. This is why the music is psychedelic in its nature and foundation rather than direct musical comparison with psychedelic rock.

We don't tend to adhere to a specific sense of genre boundary or particular music vocabulary in favour of experimentation so we rarely fit into a particular scene and that's something we're comfortable with. I think that instead we are creating our own sonic world with its own set of creative 'rules' and as long as we don't break these unspoken rules then our world stays tangible and visceral, the moment we break those rules the whole world would crumble down before us.

Review: Magic Carpet Ride, Brain Pyramid (for It's Psychedelic Baby)

Magic Carpet Ride EP (2013)

One guitar, one bass, one drum set. The mighty power trio. Blues. Souls sold to the devil. Muddy Waters tripping so hard he still believes the world ended in 1967. Ladies and gentlemen: Brain Pyramid. Formed in November 2012, this young band from Rennes, France, released their debut EP, Magic Carpet Ride, last April with their minds stuck in the past, refusing to acknowledge the 21st century is for good, evoking Hendrix without regret.
This magic ride starts off with Bad Luck, a 5 minute explosion of acid blues that leaves no room for misunderstandings. These guys love the blues and wear nothing but bell-bottoms. The second track, Stone Woman Blues, emphasizes the idea in case you didn’t get it the first time.  Mary Jane Blues is a sweet acoustic-driven ballad with hand clapping setting the rhythm and an awesome slide work by Gaston Lainé. Cosmic 1000 Years and Electric Spell, the longest and final tracks, show a more spaced out side of Brain Pyramid. The incredibly tight rhythm section and sinuous guitar work worthy of the ancient golden days of psychedelic rock will ride you through dusty landscapes inhabited by boozy characters and sexy women willing to mislead you as soon as you drop your defenses. Watch out!
To promote their work they are heading for an Iberian Tour in September in which, according to Bapt, they have been working on for some time now and are looking forward to play outside France. “I can’t hide the fact that I’m fucking excited. We’re glad to go on the road, meet people who like our culture and music and make new friends! Let’s hope the van will hold the whole tour.” When asked about how it is to be in an acid rock band in Rennes, the band stated that only a little bunch of people come to see them regularly and that it’s an arduous task to bring more people to the shows. However, the band doesn’t throw in the towel because they know it’s just a matter of time and patience and doing what they believe in and despite the fact that the band is not even one year old yet, Brain Pyramid have already managed to share the stage with some big names in the scene, being Blues Pills the biggest one, and will soon add The Grand Astoria (December 2013) to their curriculum.

Approaching the end of our little chat and amid inevitable comparisons between our hometowns and countries Brain Pyramid revealed themselves clearly honored to be playing in Black Bombaim’s hometown and ready to feel the warmness of the Spanish and Portuguese audience. The engine is roaring and expectations are high on both sides. Be there.

Interview: The Vliets (for It's Psychedelic Baby)

This is an interview I did with Ty Borhnstedt from The Vliets for It’s Psychedelic Baby:

Forget about thunderous drum beats. Forget about heavy distorted guitar/bass riffs. At least for now.
The Vliets, currently working on their full length debut, drink from nowadays electronic scene as much as they do from 60s psychedelia, trapped between avant-gardism and nostalgia, meandering between Austin and Chicago. Their first release, The Vliets EP, dates back from 2011 and was followed by last year’s God’s Drug EP, having both of them revealed a very mature sound as well as a band that knows how to spice up things without overdoing it.
We wanted to know more about this promising band and so we had this little chat with Ty Bohrnstedt, The Vliets’ front man and guitarist. We talked about those commonplaces like their influences and stuff but we also had some time to discuss UFOs and God’s drug.
