(Erotic Content) Photography: La Petite Mort, Will Santillo

Disclaimer: This post contains explicit erotic images which may be offensive to some visitors. You must understand this is just an artistic expression. Keep reading if you agree with it and you are over 18.

La Petite Mort is a French idiomatic expression for orgasm. The American/Canadian photographer Will Santillo shot a series of women masturbating and reaching the climax. The result was published by Taschen in 2011. Its introduction puts out a question: “If orgasm is the little death will masturbation be the little suicide?”.

The Destroyed Room, Jeff Wall (1978)

I was introduced to Jeff Wall’s photography by a friend who took me to a Jeff Wall exhibition. Before that I’ve never been keen on photography but what I saw there completely changed my mind.
Jeff Wall’s approach to photography drinks a lot from historical paintings but it is also quite cinematographic. He carefully constructs the scenario inside the studio with clear references to paintings.
The Destroyed Room was shot in 1978 shortly after his wife had left him for another man. At the very first look I would say this scenario is incredibly violent as if the character was deeply angry and out of control. Jeff stated he used his wife’s clothes: “I borrowed her clothes because we were still on good terms and she had the good clothes”. It is not that hard to picture an angry man focusing all of his anger on his absent wife’s possessions, even the mattress were they used to sleep side by side was not left behind.
But look again, there are at least two elements that suggest a deep passion and caring and those are obviously the red walls and the ballerina that was left untouchable or carefully placed on top that piece of furniture.
The painting referenced in this Jeff’s photograph is Delacroix’s The Death of Sardanapalus in which a megalomaniac king feeling his death coming closer decides to destroy all of his possessions resulting in an intense and violent scenario.

Trivia: this photography was also used as a cover for Sonic Youth’s compilation album The Destroyed Room: B-sides and Rarities released in 2006.

Jim Morrison by Jim Marshall (1968)

Jim Marshall, the photographer, was a rock star although he had never been in a band. Through the 60’s and 70’s he shot the most popular artists of the era, The Beatles, The Doors, Santana, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, … The list is endless.

"Jim Morrison at the Northern California Folk Rock Festival in San Jose, 1968. I don't think I ever spoke three words to Morrison. We were on the side of the stage and I was shooting with just one frame left on the roll, and Jim said, 'Hey Marshall, you want a photo?' and looked right into my camera. He was one of those guys in his own space. I never got close to him. My impression of Morrison was that he was like C.S. Lewis, spiritual without being religious." — Jim Marshall

Chema Madoz

From now on I will extend the blog’s content to other arts. I felt like this was a necessary step. The new section to be introduced is about photography and I would like to start off with Chema Madoz, a Spanish photographer who was born in 1958. His black and white surrealistic photos are quite thought-provoking and his exhibitions’ curriculum is really impressive.
