2012 Album Covers by Bruno Albuquerque

A few days ago I promised there would be some fresh stuff in 2013 and I didn’t lie.  To start off I invited Bruno Albuquerque to make a Best of 2012 Album Covers List, a task he accepted with enthusiasm. Those who don’t know who Bruno Albuquerque is might want to check this link.

Bruno Albuquerque:

Taking into account my musical taste and the discs I came physically in contact with I came up with this list of my personal favourite album covers of 2012. This selection not only bears in mind the album covers but also the object as a whole and its packaging.

(Erotic Content) Photography: La Petite Mort, Will Santillo

Disclaimer: This post contains explicit erotic images which may be offensive to some visitors. You must understand this is just an artistic expression. Keep reading if you agree with it and you are over 18.

La Petite Mort is a French idiomatic expression for orgasm. The American/Canadian photographer Will Santillo shot a series of women masturbating and reaching the climax. The result was published by Taschen in 2011. Its introduction puts out a question: “If orgasm is the little death will masturbation be the little suicide?”.

Collaboration: Man On Wire (Bruno Albuquerque + Hugo Pereira)

Movie trailer:

Two different ways of expression, two different people, one motif.
As said before this collaboration is a little different from the previous one. This time I challenged Bruno Albuquerque to make an illustration based on the documentary film Man On Wire, but Bruno is not the kind of guy who does what he is told to so he decided he would rather do a poster instead of just an illustration and the result, as always, is incredibly good.
Man On Wire is a passionate journey through Philippe Petit’s, a French high-wire artist, plan to high-wire walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. The idea of doing this is, by itself, mind-blowing but Philippe Petit’s passionate speech makes it even more special.

Wooden Art Toys, Thibaut Malet

Did you that Lego started as a wooden toys company in the early 20th century in Denmark?
Thibaut Malet definitely knew about this and that’s why he created a very limited edition of handmade wooden toys inspired by Lego. This edition is limited to 20 numbered 11cm tall pieces. The packaging and cardboard are also made out of wood.

The Destroyed Room, Jeff Wall (1978)

I was introduced to Jeff Wall’s photography by a friend who took me to a Jeff Wall exhibition. Before that I’ve never been keen on photography but what I saw there completely changed my mind.
Jeff Wall’s approach to photography drinks a lot from historical paintings but it is also quite cinematographic. He carefully constructs the scenario inside the studio with clear references to paintings.
The Destroyed Room was shot in 1978 shortly after his wife had left him for another man. At the very first look I would say this scenario is incredibly violent as if the character was deeply angry and out of control. Jeff stated he used his wife’s clothes: “I borrowed her clothes because we were still on good terms and she had the good clothes”. It is not that hard to picture an angry man focusing all of his anger on his absent wife’s possessions, even the mattress were they used to sleep side by side was not left behind.
But look again, there are at least two elements that suggest a deep passion and caring and those are obviously the red walls and the ballerina that was left untouchable or carefully placed on top that piece of furniture.
The painting referenced in this Jeff’s photograph is Delacroix’s The Death of Sardanapalus in which a megalomaniac king feeling his death coming closer decides to destroy all of his possessions resulting in an intense and violent scenario.

Trivia: this photography was also used as a cover for Sonic Youth’s compilation album The Destroyed Room: B-sides and Rarities released in 2006.

Design: One, Two, Tree

I swear I haven’t spent all day thinking about Christmas! I was just surfing the internet and it seems like I found another pretty lovely idea for Christmas.
Are you tired of those Christmas trees you buy year after year because they don’t last long enough? Then this might be a solution. An eco-friendly, stylish Christmas tree and the packaging is also rather funny.

Beija-flor (hand-made notebooks)

Beija-flor (hummingbird) is a brand of hand-made notebooks created by Raquel and Su. Both are designers who dedicate their free-time to this lovely project. They design and produce the notebooks and sometimes they invite illustrators to spice things up a bit. (Below you can watch a short video illustrating the process.)

Basically, there are two collections: Azulejos de bolso (which means pocket tiles) and Ilustrações de bolso (which means pocket illustrations). The first one is all about colourful patterns since it is inspired by the typical Portuguese tiles, while the second one is where they have their friends to illustrate the notebooks.
The notebooks come in different formats (A5, A6, A7) and the price is usually between 2€ and 4€.
Don’t hesitate to send them an e-mail asking all your questions. I’m sure they will be glad to clarify your doubts.
Christmas is coming so I hope this can be of some help. It could be a nice present for your girl or maybe your sister or mother.
