Habemus Papam is an Italian film which was part of the 64th Cannes Film
Festival’s competition. It all begins when the Pope dies and the conclave meets
in the Vatican to vote for the new Pope. This very scene is quite interesting
because the viewer is invited to enter the conclave’s members minds: “each and every one praying they don't get the nod, aware of the crushing effect that the pontificate would have on their lives”.
On one hand there’s the Cardinal Melville’s, the recently elected Pope
played by Michel Piccoli, crushing drama as his spiritual responsibilities try
to defeat his human fears, while on the other hand there’s Nani Moretti’s
joyful role as the psychoanalyst Professor Brezzi.
Although the idea is quite original, the view of the College of
Cardinals is rather simplistic and during the first minutes you might find some
similarities with The King’s Speech.
