This Monday, Bertelsmann and Pearson dropped a bomb within the book
publication industry. Random House, owned by Bertelsmann, and Penguin, owned by
Pearson, will merge to create Penguin Random House.
This union is meant to oppose the internet giants like Google, Apple and
especially Amazon. However, “analysts have raised questions about possibleregulatory hurdles, given that the combined companies would have more than aquarter of the consumer publishing business in big, English-language marketslike the United States and Britain. Especially in Europe, regulators have beensensitive to the possible effects on “cultural diversity” when media businesscombine.” (The New York Times)
